Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Malign Melanoma

Journal Title: Nükleer Tıp Seminerleri - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is an effective method used in the staging of malignant melanoma and provides strong prognostic information. Preoperative lymphoscintigraphy visualizing lymphatic drainage is the first step in SLNB. Lymphoscintigraphy is followed by the surgical excision of SLNs using gamma probe and histopathological evaluation. The success of the method is related to selection, preparation and injection of radiopharmaceutical, effective use of imaging techniques, experience of the surgeon, methods used in histopathological evaluation and communication between nuclear medicine, surgery, and pathology specialists.
