Sequence analysis of gene encoding cyclotides in three species of Violaceae and determination of their anti-microbial activities
Journal Title: Journal of Biochemical & Microbial Technology - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
Cyclotides are plant peptides, which are characterized by their unique cyclic cysteine knot structure. These peptides have a variety of biological activity including anti-HIV, anti-microbial and cytotoxic effects. In the current study, we compared these gene sequences encoding cyclotides from Viola odorata, V. ignobilis and V. occulta. We also extracted total cyclotides content from V. ignobilis by fractionation method and semipurified these on a SPE-CI8 (Solid Phase Extraction). Anti-microbial activity of the semi-purified cyclotides was determined by radial diffusion assay (RDA). Three groups of bacteria were studied including human pathogenic bacteria, plant pathogenic bacteria and soil benefit bacteria. Three gene encoding cyclotides were identified in studied species. The most susceptible bacterium in human pathogenic group was Staphylococcus aureus. Xanthomonas oryzea was the most susceptible bacterium between the three studied groups.

Optimization of xylanase production by Cryptococcus flavescens LEB-AY10 from steam exploded sugarcane bagasse
The production of a thermostable xylanase was evaluated using steam exploded sugarcane bagasse as substrate. Initially, the selected yeast isolate was identified as Cryptococcus flavescens LEB-AY10 (CCT 7725) by sequenci...

Oxygen transfer rate modulates the dextransucrase production by Acetobacter tropicalis
Dextransucrase is an important class of extracellular enzymes with great industrial importance. Dextransucrase synthesizes the high molecular weight glucose polymer dextran by transferring D-glucosyl moieties to a growin...
On the function of pentadecanoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid during culturing of the thraustochytrid, Aurantiochytriumsp. NB6-3
During culturing of Aurantiochytriumsp NB6-3, the maximum triglyceride (TG) content was obtained at the end of logarithmic phase, after which it rapidly decreased until the mid-stationary phase. Of these TGs, pentadecano...
