Serum Homocysteine Levels As a Novel Biomarker in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction
Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2012, Vol 1, Issue 4
Abstract
Background:Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of mortality worldwide. 15-20% of major cardiovascular events occur in patients with no major traditional cardiovascular risk factors. As a result efforts have been directed at finding newer & better biomarkers which can predict about such cases. Materials & Methods:In this study, 50 patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction were studied for serum homocystine levels & compared with age and sex matched 50 controls selected by simple random sampling. Fasting plasma Homocysteine level was estimatied using Enzymatic photometry. Results:Results obtained indicated that risk of myocardial infarction increases with age and is seen predominantly in males. The serum homocysteine levels of the study group (22.85±8.61 mol/l) was significantly higher than the control group(13.84±7.03 mol/l). The serum homocysteine levels in those who expired were higher in those who expired (25.21± mol/l) than in those who survived (22.48±8.82micromol/l) at one year however this finding was not statistically significant. All these observations correlated well with the observations made by other studies conducted by various authors. Conclusion:Homocystein is a novel biomarker in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Homocysteine levels in myocardial infarction patient are important and useful biomarker to predict long term mortality risk.
