Several unpublished Theatines’ letters concerning the activity of the order in Georgia in the 17th Century

Journal Title: Pro Georgia. Journal of Kartvelological Studies - Year 2013, Vol 0, Issue 23

Abstract

The letters of the Theatines, preserved mainly in the Archive of the Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith (Archivio Propaganda Fide, APF) as well as in the General Archive of the Theatines in Rome (Archivio Generale di Teatini, AGT ), constitute an important source for both Georgian history of the 17th century and the missionary activities of the order. Many of them have been already published , other remain still in manuscripts. Several of the latter are published below; among them a long and interesting report of Pietro Avitabile, produced in 1634, as well as another one of Andrea Borromea, Giovanni Battista Monti and Giuseppe Zampi, written in Mingrelia in 1655. There is also reported an extensive passage from a Pietro Avitabile’s letter, published until now only in a shorter version. Other letters here edited are produced by less known religious from the order, such as Geatano Alessandri and Giuseppe Torricella. As a rule the letters are presented in the original version, preserving the author’s ortography (including use of capital letters) and punctuation. The only excepion is made for use of accents over the letters (à, é, è, ò, etc.), not consequent in the sources, which has been reported here in a modern form. The punctuation has been modernized only in exceptional cases, when it would be difficult to understand correctly the quoted passage. The sign „(…)” means that a word has not been read from the manuscript, whereas „[…]” introduces a part of a word that has been completed by the editor. The numbers put in the text between „<” and „>” mark beginnings of respective card in the manuscripts.
