Sexuality of perimenopausal women

Abstract
[b]introduction[/b]. Sexuality is a general sensation and behaviour related to the feeling of sexual desire. It affects all aspects of life and evolves with the age and experience of the individual. [b]Aim.[/b] The aim of the study is to present the essence of sexual life of perimenopausal women. [b]material and method[/b]. The research involved 100 randomly selected women aged 45–55 years of different social and professional status. The research tool was a self designed anonymous questionnaire which contained 25 closed questions. [b]results.[/b] Analysis showed that the majority of women – 83% experience some menopausal symptoms. The most frequent are: sleep disturbances, hot flushes, depressed mood and irritability; Despite the ailments, 91% do not use hormone replacement therapy. Negative impact of mid-life changes on sexual activity is experienced by 62% of respondents. The most burdensome symptoms are: vaginal dryness -30%, low sexual desire -22%. Most women see themselves as being attractive – 54%, and declare that partners also find them to be attractive and acceptable – 71%. Sexual activity is declared by 59%, satisfaction with sex life – 49% of women. For the majority, sexual contacts are important and treated as a pleasure and a necessary part of the relationship with their partner; however, 11% of respondents regard sexual contacts as an unpleasant duty. [b]conclusions. [/b]Sexual activity in perimenopausal women decreases and sexual relations are less frequent than before menopause. Despite the troubling menopausal symptoms, women remain sexually active and sexuality is an important part of their lives.
