Significant Caries Index acc. Bratthall in 12-year-old children living in Wysokie Mazowieckie region

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2008, Vol 61, Issue 12

Abstract

Introduction: In every population we can identify a group of people with extremely high intensity of caries. Bratthall proposed a new index – Significant Caries Index (SiC Index). SiC is calculated by arranging individual DMF in the growing order and separating 1/3 with the highest values. Then individual DMF values are added up and divided by the number of people in the group. Aim of the study: To evaluate the SiC Index in 12year-old children in Wysokie Mazowieckie region. Material and methods: There were 110 (57 girls and 53 boys) 12-year-old children from Wysokie Mazowieckie region who participated in the study. Caries intensity was determined by means of DMF and SiC index. Results: Mean DMF in the examined population was high and measured 4.33. After separating 1/3 of children with highest DMF levels SiC index was calculated. It measured 7.76. Conclusions: Populations similar to the one from the Podlaskie region require oral health education and widely understood prophylaxis. All children should benefit from it with particular focus on high-risk groups (SiC group).
