Sleep disorders of breathing in snoring children in the light of the polysomnography

Abstract

&lt;b&gt;Aim.&lt;/b&gt; to define the incidence and nature of sleep disorders of breathing (SDB) with snoring children. &lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Material and methods.&lt;/b&gt; 101 children (54 boys and 47 girls, mean age: 4 yrs) with sleep snoring were examined in the sleep laboratory. An overnight polysomnography (PSG) was performed. Twelve children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy were then treated with surgery and examined again within 3-24 months. &lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Results.&lt;/b&gt; OSAS was identified in 32.2% and upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) in 25.6% of all examined children. In the remaining cases (42.2%) the primary snoring was recognized. In 11 patients diagnosis was not established. In all children treated with the adenotonsillectomy the apneas and most of other OSAS symptoms as well as snoring disapeared albeit recurrent paradoxical respiratory movements persisted. &lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Conclusions.&lt;/b&gt; 1. More than 50% of children that snore during sleep can have SDB in the form of OSAS or UARS. 2. If the cause of OSAS is adenotonsillar hypertrophy, the surgery can be conducive to the healing of the syndrome. 3. PSG plays a vital part in diagnostic procedure.
