SOCIAL INFLUENCE OF MASS MEDIA AS A FACTOR TO CONSTRUCT FOREIGN POLICY IDENTITY OF THE STATE

Journal Title: Регіональні студії - Year 2018, Vol 13, Issue

Abstract

Due to increasing role of mass media in all the spheres of social life activities, their influence on social and political and cultural development of the society seems to be crucially important. The growth of such influence directly leads to the modification of people’s identity markers within a particular state and, therefore, transforms the latter’s identity. Mass culture produced by the media influences social identity which is also often built under the impact of their psychological techniques and manipulations. Since the collective identity of society that develops in a certain state is the basis of the latter’s foreign policy identity, the active actions of modern mass media affect the process of identification of the state on the international arena. Assimilation of a new media culture by the society transforms a set of worldview norms and symbols to be necessary for building a foreign policy identity of the state. Therefore, the latter should balance the existing influence of the media in order to preserve the relative stability of the process of its identification and the positions it has within the world political space.
