Soldier Women and “Soldiers’ Women” in Early Republic Novels

Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 4

Abstract

Novels which tell about women who actively engage in wars, or work in homefront largely differ in women sexuality from those which give place to women only as soldiers’ spouses/fiancées/lovers in post-war conditions. We could discern that self sacrificing and hard-working women characters fighting in fronts and homefront lose their sexes, and what is more important, masculinize; on the other hand, in post-war novels women regain their feminine qualities, and end up with being sexual fetishes. With the end of the war, women who replaced men’s jobs during wartime are directed back to their former roles; good wives for men, and good mothers and good educators for children. This article, which detects sports as a ‚discipliner‛ for women body in post-war conditions, studies the changing sexuality roles of women over time in early Republic period novels in accordance with militarist values.
