Some reproductive parameters of populations of Macoma calcarea (Bivalvia, Tellinidae) in the Barents and Pechora Seas
Journal Title: Вестник МГТУ - Year 2017, Vol 20, Issue 2
Abstract
Macoma calcarea is a boreal-arctic species widespread in all the northern seas of Russia. Like all bivalve molluscs M. calcarea plays an important role in marine ecosystems. Despite the widespread use many aspects of the biology of this species have not been adequately studied. The aim of the work is to establish a number of reproductive parameters (the sexual composition, the size of sexual maturity, breeding time, the size of the embryonic shell, the size of oocytes and spermatozoa) in the Barents Sea bivalve Macoma calcarea in areas with different hydrological regimes. Molluscs of the populations localized in the area of the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago, in the Varandey, Ivanovskaya, Drozdovka and Ura Bays have been investigated. The material for the study has been samples of molluscs harvested in the mouths of the Barents and Pechora Seas in the period from 2006 to 2011 by the researchers of the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute. 680 samples have been studied all in all. As a result it has been found that makoms from the Novaya Zemlya population significantly differ from molluscs of other populations in the size structure, the ratio of mature and immature individuals. Also, apparently, spawning takes place in other periods than in the southern part of the Barents Sea. The abundance of young molluscs in the Ivanovskaya, Drozdovka, Ura and Varandey Bays indicates the more successful breeding in these areas, however there is also an increased elimination of large individuals. In all areas of the study among the sexually mature molluscs the dominance of males is widespread.

Antioxidant complex extracts from fucus algae of the Barents Sea
A new method for obtaining antioxidant complex extracts from fucus algae has been proposed at the example of three mass species of the Barents Sea: Fucus vesiculosus, Fucus serratus and Fucus distichus. The chemical comp...
Changes in the abundance and terms of presence in the plankton of the red king crab larvae within the Ura Bay (West Murman) in 2011–2016
The distribution and abundance of larvae of the red king crab have been studied in the eastern part of the Ura Bay as part of the Motovskoy Bay (the Barents Sea) during 2011–2016. The larvae of the red king crab in the s...
Reservoir pressure evolution model during exploration drilling
Based on the analysis of laboratory studies and literature data the method for estimating reservoir pressure in exploratory drilling has been proposed, it allows identify zones of abnormal reservoir pressure in the prese...
Long-term dynamics of biological indicators of navaga Eleginus nawaga (Walbaum, 1792) of the White Sea in relation to changes of the reservoir temperature regime
Systematic studies of navagа of the White Sea were initiated in the late 1960-ies. Data sets on dimensional indicators, age composition of populations of navaga of the Onega, Dvina, Mezen Bays and Voronka of the White Se...
Modelling cyclic reverse movements of the vessel using modified Lammeren's curves of screw action
In our national practice, the screw action curves are traditionally used either for positive values of the screw speed n and the vessel's velocity v, or when one of these characteristics of the movement is negative. Cons...
