Sources of an error in matching the colour of prosthetic restorations
Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2016, Vol 66, Issue 4
Abstract
Introduction. Colour, which is by definition a feature of light not an object is one of the physical and chemical phenomenon most difficult to describe. It is most frequently considered in three dimensions: colourimetric value (hue), brightness and saturation (intensity). Conscious perception of colour is the result of three processes: stimulus stimulation, impression and perception. The complicated process of colour perception requires the presence of three factors: the light source, the object and the detector. People are able to distinguish about 150 colours, but they can also be recognized by their intensity and brightness, hence the number of recognized colouristic degrees is about one million. In the dental technology about hundred of them are usually used. Many factors affect the possibility of colour assessment and make its selection, using also different types of restorations, a difficult, problematic and above all subjective process, which can become a source of potential differences while trying to make the perfect reconstruction of natural teeth.Aim of the study. To try to identify potential sources of errors in the selection of the restoration colours based on a questionnaire survey conducted among dentists and on literature reviews. Material and methods. The questionnaire survey was conducted among dentists, including specialists in prosthodontics and in other areas of dentistry. The results were statistically analysed. In addition, the literature findings on colour matching in prosthetic restorations were analysed. Results. Questionnaires were filled by a total of 56 dentists, including 27 specialists in prosthodontics and 29 specialists in other areas of dentistry or dentists not yet specialised. VITA Classic shade guide was reported as the most frequently used by dentists. Wherein 19.6% of the respondents use the same shade guide while selecting the colour of acrylic teeth and ceramic restorations. More than 46% of dentists describing the colour for the dental technician does not produce the so-called colour mapping of the tooth, or does it occasionally, and 37% of respondents list additional colours beyond the basic colour. Among respondents 25% of dentists often recommend additional individualisation of the tooth crown, but 21.5% respondents never make use of it. Almost 9% of respondents use or have used a spectrophotometer for colour selection. Conclusions. The selection of teeth colour is a process that depends on many factors, hence the source of potential errors in colour selection can be multidirectional, therefore the majority of colour matching during prosthetic restoration is only conditional, acceptable by the dentist and by the patient’s choice, strongly characterized by subjective assessment.
