Species Specific Activity of Digestive Enzymes in Two Freshwater Prawns Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Macrobrachium malcolmsonii Juveniles
Journal Title: Journal of Advances in Biology & Biotechnology - Year 2016, Vol 10, Issue 3
Abstract
Aim: The activity pattern of digestive enzymes (protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase) was studied in two species of freshwater prawns Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Macrobrachium malcolmsonii juveniles. Study Design: Digestive capacity of individual species may vary. In order to see whether the activities of protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase in two species of freshwater prawns are more or less similar or not under a prescribed methodology. Methodology: The hepatopancreas of prawns was blended and suspended in 10 mM phosphate buffer. After centrifugation at 15,000 rpm for 5 min, the supernatant was collected and used as crude enzyme source for the assays of protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase activities by adopting the standard methods. Results: The activity patterns of protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase were more or less similar in both the species studied. However, M. malcolmsonii showed little higher activities than that of M. rosenbergii. Conclusion: There were no clear cut species specific activities of digestive enzymes observed between M. rosenbergii and M. malcolmsonii.

Proximate, mineral and microbial analysis of kunu drinks obtained from three different cereal sources (maize, millet and guinea corn) were carried out. The proximate parameters determined include percentage moisture, ash...
Toxicological Potential of Staphylococcus Species from Specific Environment in the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria
Staphylococci are Gram-positive bacteria, with diameters of 0.5 – 1.5 μm and characterised by individual cocci, which divide in more than one plane to form grape-like clusters. They are non-motile, non-spore forming facu...
Defining an Efficient Model for Inducing Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome in Wistar Rats
Obesity and metabolic syndrome are major health problems which often present a confounding therapeutic challenge. Gene-nutrient interactions are implicated in metabolic phenotypes like Metabolic Syndrome, and rats have b...
Delimitation of the Pore in Tweety Homolog 1 Channels: A Model-guided Approach
Tweety homolog proteins have been indicated as ´putative anion channels´, but yet there is some lack of definitive data in this regard. Here, we focused on the human Tweety homolog 1 protein (hTTYH1), and elaborated a mo...
The Use of Plant Dyes for Microbial Staining and Identification: An Eco-friendly and Non-Toxic Alternative Method
Staining of microbial cells is a very important procedure in microbial identification. Cells need to be fixed and stained to increase visibility, accentuate morphological features and for preservation. The study was carr...
