SPECIFICITY OF PARENTHOOD IN FAMILY OF DIFFERENT TYPES: PROBLEMS, RISKS AND THEIR WAYS OF MINIMIZATION

Abstract

The modern variety of types of families with children formed due to the pluralization of forms of marriage and changes in the structure and functions of the family. The diversity of families in turn influenced the features in the performance of parental functions and differences in children’s living conditions. The author proposes the grouping of families in accordance with the specifics of their parental functions: families in which the parenthood is carried out in the traditional family environment (children live with biological father and mother); families in which the parenthood has been changed due to the characteristics of the family structure (children live with one from parents (usually mother); or in stepfamily (with stepfather or stepmother), or parents do not live with the child due to a distant place of work); families in which the parenthood «extends beyond the biological boundaries». The author analyzes the characteristics of parenthood in different types of families, their problems and risks, and concludes that these problems are consequence of the discrepancies between the institution of parenthood (the traditionality of its gender mechanisms, the hierarchy of rights and responsibilities of mother and father, their responsibility for the child) and contemporary forms of marital and sexual behavior. Minimizing risks and creating harmonious environment for the development of children in all types of families requires the modernization of the institution of parenthood on the principles of responsible parenting. In Ukraine, insufficient economic maintenance of life and development of the population negatively affects the specificity of parenting in families of different types, exacerbating their problems. However, the solution of these problems requires not only economic progress, but also changes in the system of views and values, modernization of existing family practices and gender interaction, pedagogical literacy and responsibility of parents. The dissemination of principles and practices of responsible parenting should become one of the directions of state family policy.
