Journal Title: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 4
Abstract
Background: Spectrum of congenital heart diseases from northeast part of India is currently unknown. Aims and Objectives: The present study was under taken to determine the spectrum of congenital heart diseases (CHD) in a tertiary care hospital from northeast India. Methods and Results: This is an observational, hospital based study. All the clinically suspected CHD cases were taken for echocardiographic study. A total of 2964 consecutive patients of CHD were analyzed at our institute between January 2014 to June 2016. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS software version 10. The median age of patients was 3 years, ranging from day 1 of life to 92 years. The male to female ratio was 1:1.2. Out of all cases, 81.7 % patients had acyanotic CHD (ACHD), 14.0 % had Cyanotic CHD (CCHD) and rest patients had Obstructive CHD. Out of all cases of CHD, Atrial septal defect(ASD) (35.1 %) was found to be most common; followed by Ventricular septal defect (VSD) (26.6 %), Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) (12.6 %) and tetrology of Fallot (TOF) (6.9 %). Among infants, VSD and TOF were the commonest ACHD and CCHD respectively. Conclusion: In present study, ASD is the commonest CHD, in contrast to reports from other parts of India where VSD predominates.TOF is the most common CCHD overall.
