Stem Cells: Therapeutic Advances for Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease in the central nervous system (CNS). In this type of inflammatory disease, T cells play an important role in the inflaming of the CNS and they gain the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) with a specific mechanism then these cells consider myelin as an external factor and attack it. This process causes various disabilities in patients. Nowadays, use of stem cells such as mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and neuronal stem cells (NSC) is going to be a proper choice to treat kindes of inflammatory disorders like MS. MSCs can be used as a regressive of inflammation and a promotor restoration of damaged areas in CNS. On the other hand, NSCs can produce astrocytes and oligodendrocytes that have been considered for clinical use. In this review, we focused on different types of stem cells and their role in the treatment of MS. This concept map tried to characterize a clear relevance between kindes of stem cell's abilities and the treatments of multiple sclerosis.
