Strategic perspectives of the Ukrainian air transportation market development

Abstract

The article analyzes the current state of the air transport market in Ukraine. It has been determined that air transport is out of competition with other types of transport in terms of the speed of delivery of passengers and urgent cargos over long distances. Providing Ukraine with a visa-free regime with the European Union has caused an increase in the volume of transportation by air transport in Ukraine. The basic indicators of aviation industry activity, domestic airports and airlines are analyzed. The dynamics of changes in volumes of passenger and cargo transportation of leading airlines is provided. During 2017, 32 local airlines operated on the market of passenger and cargo air transportation, which operated 93,0 thousand commercial flights and provided growth compared to 2016 by 17%. The number of passengers transported increased by 27.5%. During 2017, passenger traffic was carried out by 18 local airlines. 93% of total passenger traffic was carried out by five leading air carriers: Ukraine International Airlines, Wind Rose, Azur Air Ukraine, AtlasJet Ukraine and Bravo Airways. 98% of the total passenger traffic and postal traffic are concentrated in 7 major airports, namely Boryspil, Kyiv (Zhulyany), Odessa, Lviv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhya. At the same time, the share of Boryspil's main airport in the total passenger traffic dropped to 64%, while the share of Kyiv (Zhulyany), Lviv and Kharkiv airports increased somewhat.Among the problems of the Ukrainian air transport market, it can be noted: significant monopolization; Dependence on the level of economic development and purchasing power of the population; obsolete air fleet; disproportionate development of the ground base; no competitiveness of domestic air carriers; lack of innovations in this field; aviation security.
