Abstract

MIGRATION STRATEGIES. LINGUISTIC INTEGRATION AND PRESERVATION OF THE POLISH LANGUAGE IN FAMILIES IN THE BILINGUAL REGIONS OF SPAIN – EXAMPLE OF CATALONIA AND THE BALEARIC ISLANDS Poles are considered in Spain to be fast integrating linguistically and well-functioning regarding communication. Undoubtedly, a good command of language is fundamental in social and profession integration and (depending on individual motivation) partial or full cultural integration. This strategy can be extended to younger generations born in the host country, who sometimes completely abandon their native language. In this paper, we will present the motivations and fears associated with the transmission of the Polish language on the basis of diagnostic research conducted in Polish and mixed families residing in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. In the introduction, we will discuss the specifics of the policy of language integration concerning immigrants in those bilingual regions of Spain, and the public education system based on early immersion in the co-official language. Then we will justify the objective and present the methodology and results of a surveyconducted among 100 families residing in Catalonia and Majorca, which constitutes the largest concentration of Poles in the Balearic Islands. The article will conclude with observations regarding the intergenerational transmission of the Polish language also in the context of the transmission of cultural patterns (the value of the recessive language in Catalanspeaking society).
