Strength and vertical jumping performance characteristics in school-aged boys and girls
Journal Title: Biology of Sport - Year 2006, Vol 23, Issue 4
Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate differences in performance, regarding strength and power components of physical fitness, between boys and girls (mean age 7.58 years). They participated in a maximum isometric push-off force test, and vertical jumping test on a Kistler force platform. Variables were, Fmaxiso, F100, IRelF, IRFD, IReaF, body fat (BF) and jumping height for all jumps. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test for differences between genders. Differences in all variables between boys and girls were determined. Significant differences were reported in F100, IRelF, IRFD, DJmax , SJmax and BF between groups (F(1,175)=21.516, F(1,175) =7.338, F(1,175)=21.316, F(1,175)=6.968, F(1,175)=15.256, and F(1,175)=19.447, respectively, p<0.05). It was concluded that gender differences should be considered in case of developing specific test batteries, when it comes to identify specific strength and power characteristics in children.

THE EFFECTS OF BACK EXTENSION TRAINING ON BACK MUSCLE STRENGTH AND SPINAL RANGE OF MOTION IN YOUNG FEMALES
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a 10-week dynamic back extension training programme and its effects on back muscle strength, back muscle endurance and spinal range of motion (ROM) for healthy...
Effect of different recovery modalities on anaerobic power in off-road cyclists
Despite massage being widely used by athletes, opinions its effects on performance recovery differ. The aim of the study was reveal the effects of passive recovery (PR), sport massage (SM) and active recovery (AR) after...
Application of the allometric scale for the submaximal oxygen uptake in runners and rowers
Background: The aim of the current study was to determine the allometric exponents for runners and rower’s metabolic cost, while also verifying the relation of performance with and without the allometric application. Met...
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE NUMBER OF REPETITIONS PERFORMED AT GIVEN INTENSITIES IS DIFFERENT IN ENDURANCE AND STRENGTH TRAINED ATHLETES
Prescribing training intensity and volume is a key problem when designing resistance training programmes. One approach is to base training prescription on the number of repetitions performed at a given percentage of repe...
Relationship between fasting insulin resistance index (FIRI) and plasma glycerol and free fatty acid levels in physically active males and females
It is well known that whole-body insulin sensitivity is greater in sedentary women than in men. However, data concerning insulin sensitivity in physically active males and females are not available. This study aimed at e...
