Abstract

Introduction. Pain is present and accompanies people at all stages of life. The estimated number of Introduction. There is an icreasing demand for palliative care and it is directly related with an ageing population , increased incididence of cancer morbidity and cancer deaths. Palliative care is the active , total care of the patient whose disease is not responsive to curative treatement.. The nature of the work in palliative care is characterised by close and frequent contact with dying patients. This may lead to more work pressure and stress. Professionals working in hospice and palliative care settings often face situations that involve high levels of emotional engagement and personal commitment. This higly influnces their working life. Aim. The aim of the study is to assess the levels of stress among nurses working with the terminally ill cancer patients at a palliative care ward in Konin. Material and methods. The study comprised 50 palliative care nurses. A questionnaire survey was used to measure stress level. The consent of Bioethics Commitee was obtained for the following study. Results. Respondents say that they often have to deal with emotional stressors (71% group II, 67% group I). Professionals working in palliative care and hospice often suffer from work-related stress and have to deal with personal problems. The main reason for work-related stress is helplessness and the limited possibility to help the terminally ill (43% group I, 35% group II), contact with suffering (27% group II, 19% group I), contact with death (24% group II) , too strong emotional involvement ( 14% group I) . Group I reported physical-somatic complaints. Group II rarely reported on these. Conclusions. The analysis of the survey shows that group II ( nurses aged 41-55 ) is more susceptible to work-related stress. The respondents indicated work and personal problems as the source of stress. The main reason for work-related stress is helplessness and the limited possibility to help the terminally ill. In group II stress is the cause of physical-somatic problems such as back pain, stomach ache, headache , cold feet and insomnia.
