Study of hematological and coagulation profile in patients of chronic liver disease
Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 2
Abstract
Background : Liver acts as a storage depot for iron, folic acid and vitamin B12, secretes clotting factors and inhibitors. Hence, a wide range of hematological and coagulation abnormalities are seen in chronic liver diseases. Chronic liver disease manifests with variety of clinical manifestations and complications, some of which can be life threatening like thrombosis and hemmorhage. Hence, by this study the correlation between abnormalities in haematological indices and coagulation profile with severity of chronic liver disease can be revealed and future complications can be prevented by taking early steps. Aims and Objectives : • To study haematological and coagulation profile in patients of chronic liver disease. • To correlate above findings with severity of the disesase. Materials and Methods : The study was conducted in 100 patients with Chronic liver diseases attending Medicine clinic in a teaching hospital. The patients were divided into three groups according to their disease severity based on Child Pugh Score. After taking informed consent , following tests were carried out- • Complete Blood Count (CBC) done on HORIBA PENTRA XLR , 7 Part Differential Automated cell analyzer and • Coagulation Studies ( PT, APTT) done on FOURCLOT semi- automated coagulometer. Conclusion : • Hematological and coagulation abnormalities were significantly associated with the extent of liver disease. By early identification of patients at risk of bleeding, early interventional steps can be taken in the benefit of the patient.
