STUDY OF PALMAR DERMATOGLYPHICS IN CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE

Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 8

Abstract

The current study has been undertaken with an aim to study and compare dermatoglyphic configurations between cases of congenital heart disease (CHD) and controls so as to establish correlation and provide an anatomic sign for early diagnosis of the disease. It includes analysis of dermatoglyphic pattern of 400 palmar prints of 200 subjects (100 controls and 100 cases). Hand prints were taken by the „INK METHOD‟ described by Cummins &Midlo (1961). The prints thus obtained were analyzed and tested for statistical significance between the two groups. The study reveals decrease in whorls and increase in ulnar loops. Radial loop and arches are also increased in all the groups except in cases of PDA. Regarding number of palmar triradii, 3 palmar triradii show equal frequency, 4 and 5 show decrease; whereas 6 number shows increase in cases. Position of axial triradii show decreased t0 and increased t1, t0t1 and t1t2 cases. „atd‟ angle in cases is found to be more than that in control.
