Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Whether they are defined as minor or major, lower limb amputations constitute a severe health problem, causing high rates of morbidity and mortality and considerable social impact. Objectives: To study preoperative clinical risk factors to predict lower extremity amputations. Material and Methods: This is a prospective study conducted at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune. Total of 50 patients in General Surgery OPD were taken as per inclusion and exclusion criteria Results: 66% gave a positive history of preceding trauma (minor) as the inciting factor leading to amputation. Majority (74%) were diabetic, Smoking was associated in 44% of amputee patients. Chronic ischemic changes were present in 36%. Deranged lipid profiles appear to be a risk factor. Conclusions: Smoking, diabetes, deranged lipid profile were present as preoperative clinical risk factors in this study.
