Study of Semiconductor Photocatalysed Oxidation of Malic Acid Used in Cosmetic and Food Industries
Journal Title: Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences - Year 2011, Vol 6, Issue 3
Abstract
Semiconductor photocatalytic process has been widely applied as a ‘green’ technology in treating environmental contaminants, such as the removal of the indoor organic pollutants and the decolourisation and/or degradation of the soluble dyes in waste water. The malic acid is being used in a variety of skin care products, peeling agents including moisturisers, cleansers, eye cream, sunscreen and foundations etc.; where titanium oxide, zinc oxides etc. are used as the base for these materials. Similarly, this acid is also being used as a food and food preservative, curing agent, wine taste enhancer and flavouring agent. As a food additive, titanium dioxide (TiO2) is approved for use in the EU, USA, Australia and New Zealand; it is listed by its INS number 270 or as E number E270. In the present part of work, it is planned to investigate photo-oxidation of malic acid by semiconductors in the very normal conditions. The produced photo-product has been isolated as its derivatives and then analysed them by appropriate spectral or other suitable general methods. Hence, this part of reported work may help to arouse the interdisciplinary interest about the side effects on skin like irritation including redness, burning, itching, pain, scarring etc. by sensitised photo-oxidation.
