STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF SOME BRIDGE ROAD BED DEFECTS ON TECHNICAL CONDITION OF THE BRIDGES

Abstract

This article deals with bridges as important strate-gic facilities of the Ukrainian transportation infra-structure. Since a system approach to organization of the bridge life cycle does not exist, certain ele-ments fail during the early stages of operation. The least durable elements belong to the bridge road bed complex. Among the issues discussed there is a specific bridge road bed performance in comparison to motorways and the impact on the waterproofing layer. When bridge road surface irregularities ap-pear in the form of potholes, bumps and ruts, dynam-ic action of temporary mobile loads on pavement surface and load carrying structures significantly increases. It is pointed out that, unlike other coun-tries, in the domestic practices and regulatory doc-uments the issue of the irregularities’ size and na-ture is insufficiently studied. Bridge test results show that due to the above mentioned defects the dynamic factor increases by 1.5 to 2 times, which leads to reduction of design capacity of the load-bearing elements. Results of in situ experimental studies of dynamic factor and results of load bearing capacity calculations in the presence of surface irregularities are discussed. Deterioration in the performance of bridge road surfaces, waterproofing elements, expansion joints, water drainage elements also occurs due to vehicles’ acceleration and braking. Besides, fast deterioration occurs when heavy-duty vehicles move on inclined surfaces during the hot season. Numerous damages can be caused by the movement of vehicles at subfreezing temperatures due to addi-tional combined thermal and mechanical stresses. Complex approach to choosing structural concepts, materials and technologies, along with improvement of norms concerning assessment of technical condi-tion of the bridges will allow to increase service life of the load-bearing elements and to reduce midlife repair costs. The purpose of this work is to study the impact of some defects of the bridge road surface on technical condition of the load carrying structures of motorway bridges and to identify the most im-portant defects.
