Study of the pattern of cervical smear abnormalities by using conventional pap smear screening

Abstract

The study was conducted to explore various lesions of Uterine cervix including inflammatory, premalignant and malignant lesions, to find out target age group in which screening efforts can be concentrated for early detection as well as reduction of the incidence of cervical cancer, in our set up. Patients in the age group 15-50 and 50-75 years with various complaints were screened during the last 2 years period, June 2015 to July 2017. Total 3674 patients were studied. Slides were fixed in 95% ethyl alcohol and stained with Pap stain. Slides were reported according to The 2001 Bethesda System, by pathologists. Out of 3674 patients studied, 2299 (63%) showed inflammation and other benign lesions. 218 (6%) patients showed premalignant and malignant lesions. 1157 (31%) smears were NRP and inadequate. Premalignant lesions were present in >30 years of age group.
