Study of visual outcome after small incision cataract surgery observed in patients at tertiary care institute

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Ophthalmology - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Cataract is the leading cause of avoidable blindness in India. Cataract surgery forms the major workload of most ophthalmic units in the country. Conventional extracapsular cataract surgery (ECCE), MSICS, and phacoemulsification (phaco) are the three most popular forms of cataract surgery in India and rest of the world. Manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) has become popular in India in the last decade. Aims and Objectives: To study the post-operative visual outcomes after small incision cataract surgery performed at tertiary care institute. Material and Method: In the present study the patients suffering from cataract and undergoing small incision cataract surgery were enrolled in the study. The detail of all the enrolled patients including age, sex, chief complaints was recorded in a prestructured proforma. The details of clinical and systemic examination and ophthalmic examination were also recorded. All the enrolled patients underwent small incision cataract surgery with IOL implantation. Standard guidelines and protocol were followed during the surgery. The outcome of the cataract surgery was measured after 48hrs of surgery and after 4weeks of surgery using WHO guidelines. Results: There were total 1422 cases of cataract with mean age of 56.74 years with standard deviation of 11.39 years. There were 50.14% male and 49.86% female patients in the study. It was seen that majority of the patients (80.10%) were having vision less than 3/60 and 15.05% were having vision between 6/60 to 3/60. After the 48hrs of surgery 54.99% patients were having visual acuity between 6/24 to 6/60 whereas 18% patients were having visual acuity between 6/6 to 6/18. After 4 weeks of surgery 44.94% patients were having visual acuity between 6/6 to 6/18 and 43.04% were having visual acuity between 6/24 to 6/60. The overall early and late complication rate was 10.27% and 2.46%. Conclusion: Thus we conclude that 44.94% had a good outcome while 43.04% had a borderline outcome after small incision cataract surgery performed at tertiary care institute.
