STUDY ON DOMESTIC CORPORAL PUNISHMENT OF CHILDREN

Abstract
Introduction: A conflict between a child and a parent is classified into three groups – non violent disciplining, psychological aggression and physical assault.Literature review has conclusively proved the strong association between childhood corporal punishment and later psychological disorders. The aim of the study is to assess the prevalence, pattern and other socio-demographic variables of corporal punishment of children in their home by their parents. Methods: This is a cross sectional study done on parents attending OPD of Govt Thiruvannamalai Medical College Hospital. The instrument used is Parent-Child Conflict Tactic Scale. Results: The overall yearly prevalence of corporal punishment in this study is 83.01%.The prevalence of Corporal Punishment decreased with increasing Parental age and was higher in the Lower Socio-economic classes. Boys were victims to Corporal Punishment more than the Girls.Among the test items for Lower level of Physical assault, the most prevalent strategy used by the parents in the study group is Pinching and slapping. The overall prevalence of physical assault is very low and the overall prevalence of Psychological aggression is 85%. Conclusion: The high prevalence of corporal punishment warrants positive parenting education to the parents
