Study on Ovine Fasciollosis in Wegdi District, North East Ethiopia

Abstract
A Cross-sectional study was conducted in selected Kebele’s of Wegdi Wereda of South Wollo zone from October 2011 up to December 2011with the objective of estimating the prevalence and related risk factors of fasciolosis in sheep. A total of 384 faecal samples were collected from sheep in three randomly selected peasant associations. Age, sex, altitude and month of the year was recorded during sampling. Based on the coprological study, from the total of 384 animals sampled 120 (31.25%) animals were found positive for fasciolosis. There was significant variation in the prevalence of ovine fasciolosis among the peasant associations of the study district (P < 0.05) where in Hawy peasant association were a higher rate of prevalence (36.23%) and lower prevalence rate in ertomasaya (22.32%). Statistical analysis has not revealed a significant variation between prevalence and sex of the animals (P >0.05). But statistically significant variation was seen among age categories as higher prevalence was observed in lambs (0.5-2years) (43.6%) and lower in animals at the age > 4years (16.12%) (P<0.05). The present study has shown the importance of fasciolosis in the study area. Therefore, good management practice including fluke elimination by regular treatment, an alternative use of pasture lands and chemical measure for control of intermediate host are strongly recommended to reduce the problems and exploited economic benefit of sheep production in the area.
