Abstract
Summary book of property documents and files of Kamieniec bishopric of 1759. In 2009, Tadeusz M. Trajdos from Institute of history of Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, and pater Marek Miławicki from Dominican Historical Institute in Cracow have conducted a query in the library of Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve in Ryazan (Russia). They examined a manuscript codex preserved there (sign.ref. II-15.8785), miscatalogued by Soviet archivists as a cartulary of Dominican monastery in Kamieniec Podolski. In fact, it is a summary book of property documents and files of Catholic bishopric of Kamieniec, recording disputes and border litigations pertaining to the bishopric’s land holdings. The researchers realized, that they were dealing with a book, another copy of which was preserved in Alexander Czołowski Collection in Central Archive of Historical Records in Warsaw, under signature reference number 248. Both copies – Ryazan clean copy and Warsaw draft – were prepared in 1759 by magistrate official from Kamieniec Podolski, Jakub Łubkowski, plenipotentiary of the curia for the bishopric’s economy holdings. The summary book was created at a breakthrough time. 1757 marks the passing of Kamieniec bishop Mikołaj Dembowski, who effectively defended the bishopric’s holdings against challenges from its magnate and noble neighbours through negotiations and compromise. In the autumn of 1759, the diocese was taken over by Adam Krasiński, soon-to-be leader of Bar Confederacy, the last Bishop of Kamieniec in Polish times. The summary book was intended as a aid for him, in scope of property disputes and legal protection of the owned holdings.
