SUPPLY OF THE ALLIED ARMIES DURING THE CRIMEAN WAR

Abstract

The Crimean War which took place between 1853 – 1856 is a milestone for the political history of Europe as well as the Ottoman history. The United Kingdom and France participated the war on the side of the Ottoman Empire when the security of Danube basin at the micro scale and the Middle Eastern and Indian trade routes at the macro scale were threatened by Russia. Supply of the allied armies during the war, which signifies the end of the Metternich system, was carried out by the resource allocation mechanism of the Ottoman warfare. This case was quite challenging for the logistics capacity of the Ottoman Empire, who found herself in an unexpected war. In this study, supply activities related with the allied armies are dealt with in the light of the archival documents.
