SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Abstract

Supported employment is a special form of employment which is provided in theopen labor market for people with disabilities who are unable to obtain employmentindependently and to stay employed without special support. First of all, it involvesassistance and support of a job coach or a job assistant. The scope of their duties is verybroad. On the one hand, they are a disabled employee’s assistant who helps him/herobtain permanent employment. On the other hand, they are a consultant to this disabledperson’s employer who usually has a lot of doubts and concerns about employing a disa-bled person. The concept of supported employment was developed and implemented inthe United States at the beginning of the eighties of the last century. However, it quicklystarted to spread to other countries, including Poland.
