Abstract
In the current year we are celebrating the 750th anniversary of Saint Hedwig’s canonization. The article presents the history of patron saint of Silesia’s canonization process. Each stage of this procedure has been discussed in detail according to the chronology of events recorded by the author of her hagiography, and depicted by an anonymous artist in the medieval codices. Through analysis of the preserved sources the author has indicated the terms of Church law concerning the act of canonization. The text shows the political and diplomatic realities of the Pontifical Court which was the centre of Europe’s religious and political life. Silesian and Polish representatives’ presence there is also highlighted. By describing the post – canonization religious ceremonies in Trzebnica the author has also contributed to our understanding of the details of the ancient liturgy and sacred rituals important to the religious culture of Silesia inhabitants in the Middle Ages.
