Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
In the article the existence of major liturgical device – antimension is examined. The antimension is a small piece of cloth of either linen or silk, decorated with representations of the entombment of Christ and the four Evangelists and with small relic of martyr is sewn into it. The Eucharist cannot be celebrated without an antimension that must be consecrated by a bishop and indeed is given to the priest by the bishop as a witness to his permission to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. In particular, the ways and strategies of granting a new function to be a gift to the antimension are analysed. It is clarified that antimension could be granted for the obtaining of prayer patronage in form of a church endowment, icons, and also could be kept for transmitting memory about church donator. The use of donated antimension outside the church (at home, in museums etc) was also take into account in this article. Special attention was paid to giving of antimentions to the most revered ChristianOrthodox centres – Mount Sinai and Mount Athos. The practice of giving of antimensions continues to this day in modified form, so further studies of this problem are needed.
