TABERÎ'NİN TÂRÎHU'L-ÜMEM VE'L-MÜLÛK ADLI ESERİNDE ESBÂB-I NÜZÛL ASBĀB AL-NUZŪL İN ṬABARĪ’S “TĀRĪKH AL-UMAM WA AL-MULŪK”

Abstract
Muḥammad ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī (ö. 310/923) is one of the scholars of knowledge who holds an important place in many fields such as tafsīr, ḥadīth, fiqh, and history. Taberi who lived 70 years in 3. Hijri century and more than 10 years in 4. Hijri century, witnessed deep conflict and struggle during Abbasid era. Among the historians he is accepted as sheik of Islamic historians or “Herodotus of Islamic world”. His work Tārīkh al-Umam wa al-Mulūk comprises the events beginning with the history of humanity until his own period. One of the important aspects of the work is that it provides contextual information about the asbāb al-nuzūl of some Qur’ānic verses or chapters. By shedding light on the circumstances of revelation of some verses through Qur’ānic history, reflecting the characteristics of the environment of revelation, and providing information on the analyses of some rulings, al-Ṭabarī’s work has a separate value as a source from the perspective of tafsīr studies. Although the works of historians like ibn Isḥāq and ibn Hishām have been references in terms of asbāb al-nuzūl for al-Ṭabarī, the latter evaluated this data in a broader context. The author, who is known for his attachment to isnād, has adopted an approach to transmission that also takes into account the layers of the śaḥaba and tābi‘een who based their narration chain on the asbāb al-nuzūl whose source rely on the Prophet Muhammad.
