TARAS SHEVCHENKO AND DONECHYNA

Abstract

The publication is organized in the form of a chronological fact book “Donetsk Shevchenkeana in dates and events 1851–2014” (Donetsk, 2014) compiled by Tamara Pishvanova. The researcher used a wide range of funds in local archives, cultural and educational establishments. The immediate sources of information include newspapers, periodic- als, theses, literary and ethnographic studies, and writers’ works. The review analyzes the fact book data according to the way T. Shevchenko’s name is represented in the context of the Russian empire, Soviet era, German occupation of Ukraine during the Second World War, and recent years after the dec- laration of state independence of Ukraine. Virtually all these periods are characterized by both positive and negative (to varying degrees) attitude to the figure of T. Shevchenko. First and foremost, it is true for the official position of the government, authorities and certain political forces and movements. It was not uncommon for them to make attempts to use the image of Shevchenko to advantage of some ideology or political situation. Thus, Soviet authorities struggled to create the image of “two Shevchenkos”, namely “a revolutionary democrat” and “a controversial author” whose creative work was “influenced by the landlords’ culture”. On the one hand, he was presented as “a dogged critic of old Moscow”, while on the other – as a precursor of “Moscow proletarian”, a representative of “Ukrainian proletarian culture”. As for the general public and intellectuals, their understanding of T. Shevchenko’s name and role in the history of Ukrainian culture and rise of national spirituality, there is ample evidence of profound respect to the artist. Since late nineteenth century, national love for the poet of genius has been manifested in various amateur actions. They include holding Shevchenko literary soirees in schools and libraries, staging theatrical performances based on his works, pub- lishing poems dedicated to Shevchenko, composing folk songs, translating Shevchenko’s works into Russian and other languages, public initiatives on naming streets, schools, towns after T. Shevchenko, installing monuments to the poet etc. Many artists who were born or lived in the Donetsk region became laureates of Shevchenko National Prize. The review concludes that “Donetsk Shevchenkeana” is worth being republished in the nearest future. Current situa- tion in Ukraine, caused by the aggression of the “Russian world” in Crimea and Donbass, makes it increasingly topical and timely.
