Technological mistake of the cathedral builders?

Journal Title: Archaeologia Historica Polona - Year 2011, Vol 19, Issue 0

Abstract

Surfaces of iron objects were often coated with tin in the Middle Ages. Occurrence of such coating was stated on heads of hobnails of door woodwork in the southern porch of St. Johns cathedral in Toruń, erected about 1484. The subject literature until now has assumed that there was the only purpose of such a treatment – it had to protect an iron object from corrosion. However, tin situating in galvanic series of metals excludes its usage as anti-corrosion coating. It can be supposed, therefore, that it rather served as decorative painting layer of silver color.
