TEMPERAMENTAL DETERMINANTS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AS PREVENTIVE FACTOR OF HEART DISEASES - IN THE SEARCH OF THE MODEL

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. One of the main modifiers of the need for stimulation, including sport activity is one's temperament. Properly planned physical effort often prevents many contemporary diseases such as coronary artery disease. The risk factor is in that case the increased level of homocysteine, its concentration in the blood is depends on diet or lack of physical activity. Because of the above, we tried to design a generał model of the presented relationship. In the study three types of factors are analyzed: biochemical factors (homocysteine and the folie acid decreasing the concentration of homocysteine in the blood); sports activity and temperament. Materiał and methods. We examined 130 individuals. The urinary cotinine levels measurements were biochemical parameter. Cotinine was marked, after base liquid hydrolysis and liquid-liquid extraction procedurę, by means of High-performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method with UV detection. The psychological instruments used included Strelau & Zawadzki's Temperament Qu-estionnaire (PTS) and Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scalę. Results. It can be concluded that the morę intensively and the longer the person practices the sport, the higher the concentration of homocysteine in the blood. The model presented constitutes a support to the current trend in the studies showing results undermining direct preventive gains from the sport activity. Conclusions. Path analysis indicates negative relationship between sports activity and the level of homocysteine that can be linked with improper diet or the lack of supplementation with folie acid in the doses used in intensive physical effort and the lack of additional supplementation with B6 vitamin.
