Temperature changes of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) leaves infected by fungi of Alternaria sp.
Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2009, Vol 30, Issue 1
Abstract
Thermographic examination enables to evaluate nondestructively the changes of radiation temperature on the surface of various objects. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of a biotic stress caused by the species A. brassicae and A. brassicicola on the temperature of three varieties of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) with different genetic origin. The studied Alternaria species are pathogenic to oilseed rape and cause a damaging disease called dark spot of brassicas. The studied material consisted of winter oilseed rape plants of the varieties Monolit, Rasmus and Digger. Plants were inoculated at BBCH 13, using agar discs overgrown with mycelium of A. brassicae and A. brassicicola. Fungal isolates were obtained from oilseed rape plants with dark spot symptoms. The thermographic inspection was performed 6 days after inoculation of plants with the use of VIGOcam v50 camera (VIGO Systems, Warsaw, Poland), working in the spectral range from 8 to 13 μm. The camera is constructed with the use of a 384 × 288 microbolometric detector array which enables to obtain radiometric resolution of 60 mK. The study of oilseed rape plants in a pot experiment was performed using the passive thermography method. The temperature distribution on the surface of particular leaves was registered from the distance of 0.8 m and 1.2 m.A statistically significant differentiation between mean temperature of inoculated and control oilseed rape leaves was demonstrated. Infected leaves indicated temperature higher by up to 3.5[sup]o[/sup]C comparing to healthy leaves. In the group of inoculated plants significant differences between the temperature of healthy and infected leaves were found. There were positive values of differences between the mean temperature of infected leaves and the air temperature and negative values for healthy leaves, what suggests the reduction of the transpiration intensivity as a result of infection. No significant differences were found between the influence of A. brassicae and A. brassicicola species, but the differences were noted among the studied varieties of oilseed rape. The smallest differences between mean temperature values among infected plants as well as between infected and uninfected plants were observed for cv. Monolit. The studies demonstrated a high potential of thermographic technologies in practical evaluations connected with disease epidemiology, resistance breeding and the protection of agricultural crops.
