Temporomandibular joint in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common systemic inflammatory disease of the connective tissue in childhood. This disease is characterized by chronic inflammation of one or more joints. It affects synovial joints and may cause significant skeletal joint destruction. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ), like other joints, may become severely affected resulting in aberrant mandibular growth and abnormal dentofacial development. Early recognition of TMJ condylar changes is important for diagnosis and treatment planning. This paper focuses on the prevalence of TMJ arthritis in JIA and the imaging modalities used to detect TMJ arthritis.
