Thalamic medial system is a key link in the neural circuits of negative emotions induced by chronic pain

Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 11

Abstract

Chronic pain and its induced negative emotional responses ( fear, anxiety, depression, etc. ) seriously affect the combat effectiveness of troops and the quality of life of patients, but its related neural circuits and mechanisms are unsolved problems in life science. In the central nervous system, the neural pathways for nociceptive sensory information transmission are composed of the thalamic lateral system and the thalamic medial system. The thalamic medial system is primarily relayed in the dorsal thalamic midline and medial nuclei ( TMMN), and it terminates in the limbic cortex and subcortical structures of the cerebrum. In addition to being associated with pain, it is also associated with negative emotional responses. Therefore, in recent years, we have focused on the role of neural circuits formed between TMMN and the cerebral cortex and subcortical structures in chronic pain and its negative emotional responses. The results of these studies not only show that the thalamic medial system is a key link in the neural circuits of negative emotions induced by chronic pain, but also lay a foundation for revealing the underlying mechanism of chronic pain and its induced negative emotional responses, and provide clues for further research.
