THE ACTIVITIES AND POLICIES OF SULTANATE OF RUM'S SULTANS TO IMPROVE INTERNATIONAL COMMERCE

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 42

Abstract

Since the Sultanate of Rum (also known as "Turkey Seljuk State", "Anatolian Seljuk State", 1075-1318) was established in Turkey (Anatolia, Bilâd-ı Rum), the geopolitical and strategic importance of which still didn't decrease (increased, even), it has benefited from all the advantages of the geography. The importance of the policies that were implemented cannot be denied in this success, maybe more than geographical advantages. The Christian sources mention the economic richness of the Sultanate of Rum in the XIII. century with admiration and jealousy, as if talking about a dream land. It is obvious that the conscious policies implemented by the sultans and administrators of the Sultanate of Rum were one of the key factors in reaching these riches. Non-governmental organizations had important contributions to the settlement of Anatolia, in addition to the aforementioned official policies of the Sultanate of Rum (1075-1318). Sects and congregations were very important among these non-governmental organizations. The dervish lodges and hermitages built by these sects were crucial in the settlement of the newly arriving population to the Sultanate's Turkey because of immigration, etc. The Seljuk Sultans have largely supported the Ahi Guild to increase industrial production and have built industrial facilities and markets in large cities in Turkey. The products such as the wool, hair and fleece wool from the leather worked in the leatherworkers' market, or sheared from animals were also being processed in industries.
