Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2006, Vol 22, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. Analysis of psychological features transformations at different stages of fencers' training the was the aim of conducted investigation. The hypothesis about influence of fencing training on fluctuation of temperament and personality factors in sport ontogenesis was formulated.Material and methods. Investigative material were three groups of competitors representing epee, foil and sabre. A conception based on staging of the training process, divided into preliminary, orientated and master phase was accepted. The following, well-known tools for psychological assessment were applied: Strelau Temperament Inventory (STI) for temperament features and Eysenck Personality Questionaire (EPQ) for dimensions of personality. The procedure enabled to obtain 7 components – parameters: extroversion / introversion, neurotism and lie as personality scales, strength of stimulation/inhibition and motility and equilibrium of nervous processes as temperament parameters. Analyses of variance as well as factorial analysis in frames of statistical tools were used for the reduction of number of studied factors.Results. Factorial analysis showed existence of three main factors (motility – reactivity, inhibition – equilibrium, neurotism-extroversion) explaining 77% of variance of studied phenomenon. Final results of investigations indicated that personality and temperament scale of top fencers was wide with predominance of competitors with strong stimulatory processes. The importance of equilibrium-inhibition factor indicated, that high competition level could be reached also by sportsmen with profiles close to introverts. Neurotic tendencies ocurred to be a negative predictor. Conclusions. It was showed that fencing training favours elevation of competitors' reactivity. The results of investigations delivered essential information with possible use for fencers' psychological diagnostics as well as for creating trainers' methodical concepts and designing technical and tactical strategies for trainees.
