The analysis of sterility of pollen of woody plants in conditions of the city of Kamyanets-Podilsky
Journal Title: Naukovyi visnyk Chernivetskoho universytetu. Biolohiia (Biolohichni systemy) - Year 2018, Vol 10, Issue 2
Abstract
The analysis of sterility of pollen of woody plants in different ecological conditions of the city of Kamyanets-Podilsky has been carried out. The material for the study was the pollen of Aesculus hippocastanum L. and Tilia cordata Mill. The material for the study was collected at various points in the city of Kamyanets-Podilsky, characterized by varying traffic intensity and localization near powerful enterprises: point 1 – the Botanical Garden area (conditional control), 2 – Hrushevsky prospect (near the «Runway Lan» bridge)); 3 – Tsensky Street (near the Kamyanets-Podilsky Sugar Plant OJSC); 4 – Kotovsky lane (district of PJSC «Podilsky cement»), 5 – Park «Vasiliev Park», which is near the street of the Nizhyn highway. Point 2 and point 5 are characterized by a higher intensity of traffic (1026 and 822 units per hour, respectively) than points 3 and 4 (547 and 753 units). In addition, Kotovsky lane is near one of the largest polluters of the city and region – PJSC «Podilsky Cement». Sterility of pollen grains were determined by iodine method. Determine the level of sterility, the coefficient of sterility and sensitivity of pollen. It was found that the highest percentage of sterility of the pollen A. hippocastanum was noted at the point 2 and 4 - 6.5% and 7.3% respectively. These research areas are characterized by high traffic density (point 2) and localization near PJSC «Podilsky Cement» (point 4). The level of sterility of pollen grains T. cordata in different city conditions has a similar pattern of change: the highest number of sterile pollen was detected at points 2 and 4. At the same time, the percentage of sterility of pollen in T. cordata was higher than that of A. hippocastanum. It was found that the sterility factor of pollen as A. hippocastanum and T. cordata increased with changes in the conditions of growth, compared with the control, and was the largest at point 2 and point 4. The coefficient of sensitivity of pollen in the studied species with the change in growth conditions decreased: 2,4 times in A. hippocastanum at all points of the study, and 3,9 and 3,7 times at points 2 and 4, respectively, in T. cordata, as compared with control. It is concluded that in areas of intensive traffic and placement of powerful enterprises of Kamyanets-Podilsky, there is an increase in the sterility of pollen grains of investigated species. Moreover, T. cordata is more sensitive to the effects of negative factors. Therefore, T. cordata pollen can be used in ecological monitoring as an indicator for the palynotoxic activity of various ecotoxicants, including emissions of transport.
