THE APPLICATION OF ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY TOMOGRAPHY (ERT), INDUCED POLARIZATION (IP) AND ELECTROMAGNETIC CONDUCTIVITY METER (ECM) METHODS FOR THE EVALUATION OF TECHNICAL CONDITION OF FLOOD EMBANKMENT CORPUS
Journal Title: Geology, Geophysics & Environment - Year 2016, Vol 42, Issue 3
Abstract
A series of catastrophic floods that have occurred over the last twenty years in Poland, brought an urgent need for taking preventive steps to monitor river embankments conditions. The main problem seems to be development of efficient, ie. fast and economical measurements for controlling the condition of the river embankments, because the execution of the full range of geotechnical measurements is lengthy and costly. In this situation, thecheap and quick geophysical survey has been proposed to undertake this purpose. In this article the results of geophysical surveys were described which were performed using geoelectric and electromagnetic methods along a section of the Vistula embankment, located near the Maniów area in the Malopolska province. According to the archival data, this region is situated at the high-risk flooding zone. Three geophysical methods were used to recognize geotechnical conditions of the levee: (i) Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), (ii) Induced Polarization (IP) and (iii) Electromagnetic Conductivity Meters (ECM). Geoelectrical measurement results were presented in the form of resistivity and polarization cross-sections. Results of conductivity measurement were presented in the form of plots. These parameters effectively supplement geotechnical research providing information about the changes within the embankment and its substrate. It allows to predict potentially vulnerable area to water filtration during the flood risk.

The impact of the mineral composition of Carboniferous claystones on the water-induced changes of their geomechanical properties
In this article, the authors describe the characteristics and changes of geomechanical properties of Carbonifeorus claystones as related to their mineral composition and the time of soaking in water. Geomechanical proper...
The content and composition of organic matter in bottom sediments of the Rybnik reservoir – preliminary studies
Organic matter has important influences on the fate of environmental pollution in water dam reservoirs. The aim of the studies was to assess content of organic matter fractions in Rybnik reservoir bottom sediments, and t...
Pickeringite from the Pieprzowe Mts. (the Holy Cross Mts., Central Poland)
The Pieprzowe Mts., which constitute the eastern part of the Holy Cross Mts. (Central Poland), are considered a large complex of mid-Cambrian strata (Alexandrowicz 1972). In a 2-km long exposure of the Pieprzowe Mts succ...
Potential effect of pH on the leaching of heavy metals from sediments of the Carpathian dam reservoirs
Eutrophication processes occurring in the Carpathian dam reservoirs (southern Poland) have resulted in a drastic increase of incidences of decrease of pH and oxygen content in near-bottom water, which may affect metal re...
Na-montmorillonite modified with ammonium salts and azobenzene as a photoactive nanomaterial
Modification of inorganic solid structures (e.g. minerals) with organic molecules is a constantly developed topic in material sciences. The organic functionalization leads to the production of new materials with integrat...
