Abstract

Formation of archaeological artifacts collections that are part of modern exposition and funds of the Archaeological Cabinet of the Oles’ Gonchar National University Dnipropetrovsk was initiated in 1972, when the University was appointed to carry out archaeological researches on new-buildings of the Dnipropetrovs’k region, that required creation of a permanent Archaeological expedition. In 42 years of its existence field studies have ensured regular restocking of collections that contributed to the formation of a solid source base for systematic study of ancient history of the northsteppe Dnieper region. Collections of the Archaeological Cabinet of the Dnipropetrovsk National University come from zone excavations within the territorial boundaries of the Dnipropetrovsk region, thanks to what they are notable for completeness of information about the ethno-cultural processes that took place here within broad chronological limits from the Stone Age – Palaeolithic – up to the XVIII century. The largest collections come from the Neo-Eneolithic sites – Turova Gora, Hospitalny Holm, Bogdanivka, Strilcha Skela; Bronze Age settlements – Boguslav, Pavlogradske, Troitske, Baba, etc.; series of different cultures finds from the Kurgan graves in the zone of building of Alexandrovsky, Magdalinovsky, Tsarichansky, Soloniano-Tomakovsky, Frunzensky irrigation systems, as well as construction of mines in Zapadny Donbass. The concept of the exhibition was developed by Prof. Irina Kovaliova. Following chronological order and cultural affiliation the exhibits of the Archaeological Study are placed in 5 sections: 1 – The Stone age; 2 – The Bronze age; 3 – The Early Iron age; 4 – The Medieval era; 5 – The Cossack era. Collections of the Cabinet are widely known among specialists. It is on their basis that staff-members and post-graduate students of the Dnipropetrovs’k national University have done 3 doctoral and 10 candidate theses; some of the exhibits were included in academic publications both in Ukraine and abroad. The exposition of the Cabinet plays an important role in the educational process, ensuring visibility of lectures and practical classes, doing term papers, bachelor’s and master’s works, conducting archaeological practice etc.
