THE ASSESSMENT OF ILLNESS PERCEPTION AND OPINIONS ABOUT CARE OF HEART FAILURE PATIENTS

Abstract

Objective: The present study was designed to evaluate the illness perception and opinions about care of patients who have heart failure. Materials and Methods: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in cardiology clinics of Turkey High Specialization Hospital between November 2014 and February 2015. The study sample comprised of 100 patients who were hospitalized due to heart failure. The data were collected using “Questionnaire Form” containing items about demographic features, disease characteristics; “The Illness Perception Questionnaire” and “The Improving Chronic Illness Care Survey”. The data were analysed using frequency, percentage, standard deviation, Shapiro Wilk Test, Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman Rho Correlation Test. Results: Another significant statistical relationship was found between how informed patients were about their disease and the score average of he Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC). It was also discovered that there was a significant statistical relationship between The Illness Perception Questionnaire and the Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC of heart failure patients. In addition, whereas The Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC) had a positive relationship with sub-dimensions of treatment control and understanding of the disease of The Illness Perception Questionnaire. Conclusion: Based on the conclusions, it’s suggested that medical staff especially nurses, should determine the perception of patients with heart failure, level of patient satisfaction in terms of the care they have received, the sufficiency of chronic illness management and it is also suggested that they should have education about the sufficiency of chronic illness management and mentor it and lastly evaluate its results.
