The Attitudes of Teachers to Code-Switching in the Public Secondary Schools in Alamada, Cotabato

Abstract

English is the common means of communication between the peoples of different nations. It is considered as a lingua franca which means that it is used for communication between two or more groups that have different native languages. Thus, this research was conducted to investigate the attitudes of secondary teachers in the Municipality of Alamada, Cotabato to codeswitching in teaching English, Mathematics, and Science. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the English, Mathematics and Science teachers codeswitch in order to facilitate understanding of the lesson among students and to encourage class participation. Moreover, teachers have found codeswitching to be favorable especially for subject access. Lastly, although codeswitching is generally found to be favorable in teaching English, Mathematics and Science, the attitudes to codeswitching differ among teachers of the three disciplines. It is further concluded that codeswitching can be helpful and conducive to the natural learning environment.
