The behavior of salivary cortisol during an athletic competition in male contestants with intellectual disability including individuals with Down syndrome

Abstract

Background. Assessments of cortisol (C) in blood or saliva are used in scientifi c researches for evaluation of human responsiveness to psycho-phy- sical stress. This study aimed to determine temporary changes in salivary C levels induced by short-lasting competitive eff orts among athletes with intellectual disability. Material and methods. 16 males with intellectually disabled athletes of aged 17-23 participating in multiregional athletic meeting played forenoon were enrolled to this study. Four sprinters with Down syndrome (DS) started on the distance of 100m. The others without DS competed on 200 m (n = 6) and 400 m (n = 6). C was assayed in saliva samples taken twice prior to the exertions, -1hour and -2 minutes, and +5 minutes after the runs. Because of diffi culty with the sampling material, salivary glands had to be stimulated by citric acid (solid phase). Results. Athletes with DS demonstrated somewhat higher C before races than the others and lack of changes of the levels within the pre-run period. In the others contestants C increased signifi cantly throughout 1-h period before the run and additionally after its completion. The sport outcomes were varied, on 100m among DS: 17.1 -21.6, on 200m: 31.7-41.4, and on 400 m: 89.4-116.4 s. Conclusions. Non-invasive and non-stressful study procedure appeared to be diagnostic one for determination adrenal function under competitive stress among intellectual disabled athletes, however, lack of the similar observations in neutral, non-stressful conditions and small sample are the main limitation of our study.
