THE CAUSE OF AN ACCELERATED DEGRADATION OF A BALL SCREW
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 244, Issue 4
Abstract
The paper presents a case study of a failure of a ball screw, operating in a small working machine. The result of the decrease of its operational properties was a major break-down of the entire structure. In order to determine the causes of the failure, detailed material tests were carried out. The attempt to reconstruct the character of the course of the work of this component was done as well. The analyses of material structure and hardness distribution in the cross-section of the rolling elements enabled an identification of the occurred failure. The cause was an overheating of the transmission. It was the result of an underestimation of the intensity of thermal effects in the mechanism.
