THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE BODY AND SPACE IN LOUISE ERDRICH’S «THE ANTELOPE WIFE»

Abstract

The paper focuses on a correlation between the body and space in a Louise Erdrich’s novel «The Antelope wife». The purpose of this research is to prove that the novel of a Native American writer Louise Erdrich features special interconnection between space and body due to the traditional Indian view of the human body as an integral part of the earth. The research methodology is based on the ideas of M. Bakhtin, E. Husserl, M. Merleau-Ponty, V. Toporov, O. Homilko about the human body as a primary means of world exploration and the spatiality which largely determines a human body. The article explores position taken by the body in space as they are represented in the novel, attitudes of the body to space, the sensory and kinesthetic perception of the space and substantial influences the body and the artistic space have on each other. Thus, the body in the novel is seen as a spatial structure that serves as a form of spatial «exploration» of the world while space is closely connected and influenced by the body. The correlation between the body and space manifests itself through the archetype of Great Mother, symbolic representation of colors, names and spatial images such as gravity and distance.
